Be Sustainable, Be Creative, Mindfully Make

Esther Gathambo

Esther was born and raised in Kenya but moved to New Zealand four and a half years ago for an internship in Christchurch and to reconnect with her partner who she met in Kenya a year before moving.
She owns a business called Sawubona, a social enterprise she started to improve the social and economic well-being of African artisans by selling handmade homewares here in New Zealand.

Esther’s connection to The Recreators started with Ger who has been mentoring her for the past year. She has recently joined the team as the Events Coordinator and Workshop Facilitator, and she will be bringing the workshops to Hamilton.

Having come from a simple lifestyle in Kenya, she understands and sees the joys in having less and the need to repurpose things that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Esther is also studying for her Master of Management in Sustainability at Massey University and hopes to use the learnings to support organisations like The Recreators.
